As many of my friends know, I am gluten-free. Yes, another one of those awkward people to dine out with or to pester the restaurants waiter or waitresses with a book of questions. Many people normally quiz me on what is and isn’t gluten-free. The most common confusion is between rice and potatoes but I have news for you…Macaroons are gluten-free!!! Please don’t confuse this statement with sugar-free, this is am sad to say would be a lie!
So ‘Mastering Macaroons,’ this is something I have wanted to learn for a long time. London’s L’Atelier Des Chefs cooking classes host this exact offering at their Oxford Circus venue. Classes last two hours and you’ll learn how to make macaroon shells as well as four different fillings. The shells are made from ground almonds, egg whites, icing sugar and a little food colouring. The chef guides you through everything, including tasting throughout. You mix four flavoured fillings – buttercreams, ganaches, crème patissières and salted caramels are all covered. Specific fillings will vary from class to class but you can see this online so that you can pick those that most appeal to you.
This is the perfect Mothers Day opportunity to make personalized gifts or to enhance a penchant for baking. It’s unreal how many you can make in one go and the bright colorful treats left a smile on me all day. This was my first cooking course at L’Atelier Des Chefs and certainly not my last! We had the pleasure of Alice, one of the head pastry chefs. She was fabulous!
