What inspired you to start Cuckoo?
As Londoners we’re constantly on the go, so we found ourselves looking for a quick breakfast option that tasted great, was healthy and fuss free. We discovered that so many people felt the same way; they didn’t want to grab a chocolate bar or an Egg McMuffin as a quick breakfast fix, but didn’t have the time to prepare themselves something more wholesome.
Cuckoo takes a traditional Bircher muesli recipe, a classic Swiss all-in one breakfast dish which you usually have to prepare overnight, but serves it up in a handy ready-made, single serve pot. We’ve also put our own spin on the classic Bircher muesli recipe by introducing bold and interesting flavours for the modern palate, like our Elderflower & Cranberry, with a blueberry and blackcurrant compote and the Choco Sour Cherry, with a smooth layer of Madagascan vanilla. It’s the ideal quick breakfast fix and at under 300 calories per pot, you’re being kind to your waistline as well as your taste buds!
What’s it like going into business with your best friend?
We couldn’t imagine it working any other way! We met on the first day of school and have known each other for over ten years, so we know each other inside out.
We support one another’s decisions and ideas, and trust each other implicitly. Like anybody starting a business there can be ups and downs, but having your best friend by your side makes it that much easier.
Which is your favourite flavour, and why?
Oooh, that’s a difficult one! Can we choose them all!?
Lucy: My favourite has to be the Coconut, Mango, Lime & Ginger, I love the juicy and chunky pieces of ginger and the zing of lime.
Anna: It would have to be Choco Sour Cherry with a smooth layer of Madagascan Vanilla, it’s ideal during that 4 o’clock slump.
Cuckoo comes in handy on-the-go 190g pots, perfect for busy Londoners, what does your ideal day out in London look like?
Our week days are crazy busys o at the weekend an ideal day would be……obviously starting the morning with Cuckoo, then a trip to Brockley Market to indulge in all of the delicious street food and of course we can’t leave without grabbing a tea and crumpet from Good and Proper Tea
Our evening starts at Peckham Springs with their signature Aperol Spritz and after a couple of those you are likely to find us in CLF Art Café dancing the night away on the rooftop.
There are always new food trends coming on the scene, from kale to cupcakes to cronuts, any predictions for what’s next?
We think that people are becoming more and more conscious of where their food is coming from and there is a definite trend towards ‘honest ingredients’, which are locally sourced, seasonal and the best of British. We’ve made sure that this ethos runs through the Cuckoo brand using home-grown oats and sourcing the best West Country yoghurt.
Cuckoo is a modern take on traditional Bircher muesli, what do you think Dr Bircher would think of Cuckoo and its flavours, turning in his grave or reaching for a spoon?
Reaching for a spoon of course! We’ve remained true to Dr Bircher’s original ideals by keeping our products wholesome and healthy, but we’ve remixed it for the more adventurous modern palate.
What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs who want to start their own company?
1. Believe in yourself and your idea.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We were lucky enough to have some great mentors who gave us amazing advice along the way and who continue to do so.
3. Have fun! There are times when its hard work but ultimately we wake up every day loving what we do!
